project overview
Freestyle is a publication centered around hip-hop culture, music, and musicians. It uses experimental layout, type alignment, and image treatment to showcase the expressive and dynamic world of rap music and educate new audiences. The design objectives for this project were to apply typographic theories and principles to assess a magazine design system, explore typography through identity development, and consider form, structure, and style to create a wordmark for a magazine that communicates meaning and begins to build a visual language.

process work

The wordmark and spreads were both created through rapid iteration, testing small changes and tweaks to land on a style that was bold, engaging, loud, and distinctly rap. These style choices informed the rest of the publication.
final designs

The final magazine uses rotated text to confront readers, while stretched graphics combined with the red color blocking provide a bold, aggressive layout that sticks with readers as much as the music does.
